Ladies and gentlemen, real life institutionalized sexism!
CBS has fired Eddie Brill ast the comedy booker for Late Night with David Letterman after he insulted female comedians and denied them job opportunities. In 2011, he hired only one female comedian for the show, and when answering to his superiors as to WHY, he claimed “ “[t]here are a lot less female comics who are authentic. I see a lot of female comics who to please an audience will act like men.” First of all, WHAT THE FUCK DOEST THAT MEAN? Second of all, what the fuck does that mean?
Quoting jezebel: “Of course, the “women aren’t funny” argument has been made time and time again, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But as Tina Fey said in her book Bossypants, “It is an impressively arrogant move to conclude that just because you don’t like something, it is empirically not good. I don’t like Chinese food, but I don’t write articles trying to prove it doesn’t exist.” Sure Brill is allowed to think that women comedians aren’t funny, but it was problematic that he was in a position in which he was denying them jobs on principle. That’s institutional sexism.”
As a huge comedy fan, this sort of institutionalized sexism keeping women from furthering their careers into mainstream comedy-culture is really upsetting. I’m happy that CBS has chosen to hired a new comedy booker who will hopefully consider diversity when hiring. What female comedians do you want to see on David Letterman??
I wouldn’t mind Ali Waller, Chelsea Peretti, Amy Schumer, Shelby Fero, Julia Segal, Aisha Tyler, Megan Amram, Morgan Murphy, Sandra Bernhard, Sarah Thyre, Lauren Ashley Bishop, Alison Agosti, Emily Maya Mills, Lizz Winstead… Sarah Silverman? And many, many more!! If you haven’t heard of these women, go google them ASAP!
